Decorating a Small Space

Living in the city or in some cases, even the suburbs, often means sacrificing space for convenience and a city lifestyle. It also means opting out of home accessories and decor often because you don't have the space for them. This can make decorating a small space extremely frustrating, as choosing home accessories becomes a daunting task when it should be fun. Fortunately, home decor doesn't have to be difficult. Here are a few simple tips and tricks on how to work with a small space.

Color

One of the biggest things to consider when decorating a small space is color. Typically it is advised against using dark or bold colors, which can make the space feel smaller. However, this isn't always the case and the internet is full of photos of small spaces that look fantastic with a bright, bold or deep hue on the walls.

However, do take note that despite the color of the walls, very few of these spaces incorporate more than 2 or 3 colors. Too many colors becomes visually overwhelming and can make a small space feel cluttered and chaotic.

Furniture

A great way to preserve visual space is through the use of clear furnitures. This could mean a set of high quality clear acrylic dining chairs, plastic clear side tables or other furnitures.

By using items that you can actually see through, you give the illusion of more space where there really is none. Plus, when you invest in high quality pieces, you'll find that they'll last you even longer than low quality pressed wood furnitures; so you'll save money in the long run and remain ultra stylish.

Scale

Speaking of furnitures, be sure to stay within scale on all of your home accessories, furnitures and other home decor items. In fact, always bring a measuring tape with you whenever you plan to buy furnitures or other items, such as large wall art. It's important that each piece fits into the space. Avoid buying oversized furniture for small spaces, just as you would avoid buying small pieces for giant spaces. It looks out of place and will make your home decor look poorly executed.

Look Up

A small space can feel cramped, especially if you've got lower than usual ceilings. An easy way to expand the height of the room without actually raising the room (literally) is to incorporate an element that extends from the floor to the ceiling.

For example, choose curtains that can be installed at the top of the wall overhead the window. These curtains should fall just to the floor, which creates the illusion of height in a room where there is limited height. Many interior designers employ this home decor trick in small spaces all over the world and it never looks out of place, so don't be afraid to try it in your own space.
